External factors including temperature, magnetic field and impact will affect the timing accuracy of watches. Temperature changes alter the working length of the hairspring and the inertia of the balance wheel, directly affecting timekeeping accuracy. Mechanical watches contain numerous steel parts such as gears and escape wheels, making them highly susceptible to magnetism. Impact is also one of the primary causes of malfunction.

Falling-off hands, scales, diamonds and other decorative parts on the dial are very common faults. Most dial markers are inlaid or glued. Severe impact exceeding the bearing capacity will cause hands and markers to fall off.

Sapphire crystal is artificially synthesized crystal with high density and hardness that resists scratches well. However, high hardness brings brittleness. It cannot withstand bumping, heavy pressure or dropping. The crystal stays intact under normal wearing conditions but will crack easily if the watch falls or gets hit.

This problem is caused by abnormal meshing between calendar gear train and timekeeping gears. The gears may engage and disengage intermittently. For many watches, you need to manually adjust the date for months with 30 or 31 days, otherwise the date will be disordered. In addition, avoid adjusting the date when the watch is automatically switching the calendar, otherwise the calendar may get stuck or damaged.

Water usually seeps through gaps between crystal and case, crown and case, and case back and case. New watches come with elastic rubber gaskets coated with waterproof oil for good waterproof performance. Rubber gaskets will oxidize and harden over time, which weakens the waterproof effect, making regular maintenance necessary.
